All of the following MUST be included in your InDesign Document.

1. All of the content from the the fall final exam must be completed.

2. Your magazine cover is included

3. Your action and architecture InDesign pages must be finished.

4. Make a new page titled " Photo Illustration " - Place your finished photo Illustration here along with the following:
A. Describe which of the four types of Illustrations you made, and how you made it.
B. Explain what concept or meaning your illustration communicates.

5. Make a new page titled "Electronic Essay" - Place one photo from your essay on the page.
A. Explain what the overall concept of the essay is, and how you shot it and created it.

Then, Select File > Save Movie File , and select the "Email" option.

5. Look around the internet for examples of unethical photo manipulations. Be prepared to explain why the example is unethical.

Photo Essay Editing Basics

Start Windows Movie Maker

Click on View > Collections

Click on Tools > New Collection Folder
Name your folder your name

Go to File > Import into collections

Navigate to the folder where your edited photos are saved, select them, and import them.

Drag one or more photos onto the timeline.

Go to File > Import into collections, and Import your audio or record it.

Drag the sound into tthe timeline

Go to File > Save project as, and save it in your folder as last_first_phessay.

Clip off the bad parts of the audio by selecting the audio clip, dragging the blue playhead line to where you want to split the clip, and selecting Clip> Split ( Ctrl + L)

You can now select the bad portion and hit delete.

Make the photos line up with the sound by stretching them to be the right size.

Add credits at the end by clicking on the "tasks" button and selecting M"Make Titles or Credits" - Include your name and the name of anyone who helped you or cooperated.

If you have time, play with the transitions.

Final Project Part 1 - Preparing the document

Photo Illustration Must be Complete by May 21

First - Make sure that ALL of your InDesign document up to this point, including the glossary, is up to date.

Check the fall final exam, and the action/ architecture InDesign wrap up.

Next - Rename your InDesign document according to the following formula:

Period#_photojSPfinal_Last_First
Ex: 8_photojSPfinal_Connolly_Matthew_

Make sure that the document is saved IN YOUR FOLDER.

Next - Check all of the links in your document. Remember that an InDesign document is actually a collection of documents. If you start moving or renaming the photos and other files associated with it, you will have problems.

With your document open, select Window > Links. Look at the list of links. If there are any warning signs (yellow triangle w/ !), double click on that link, and select "relink." You then must find the file that you moved or changed. If you can't find the file to link, you must do that part of the page again.

Next - Make three new pages in your InDesign. Title one "Digital Contest," anothe one"Photo Illustration," the final one "Electronic Essay." Remember that your glossary should always be the final pages of teh document.

In the previous assignment, you combined two images to make a composite photo illustration. The results are striking. Look at some examples:

While these are well done, nobody is going to make the mistake that these are real, unaltered images.

However, some altered images are possibly unethical because they are realistic. Remember these:

Unethical photos

Your task is to combine at least two photos in such a way that the final image looks realistic. You may use images off of the Internet or your own images. Save your final product as a .jpg and post in on your blog. DON'T forget to label it as a "Photo Illustration" or it will be VERY unethical.

Practice composite photo Illustration - DUE TODAY

As you think about and work on your photo illustration (Due Wednesday, May 21) it is useful to practice and to study an interesting professional example.

Time Magazine's April 28, 2008 cover is a perfect example. It is a composite image that has created lots of controversy.

Reproduce the illustration.

1. Open and save the Iwo Jima photo. (It will be in evil index color. You need to change the mode to grayscale)
2. Open and save a redwood photo. (You may substitute another one)
3. Do the following:
A. Erase the backgrounds of both images. (Make sure the tree background is set to transparent)
B. Move the tree image to the Iwo Gima image.
C. Free transform the tree image to fix the size and rotation.
D. Erase pats of the tree image where the Iwo Jima image needs to show through.
E. Save your work.
F. Post your finished reproduction to your blog.

Major assignments left in the year:

1. Photo Essay - Look over the preview assignment to remind yourself what they look and sound like.

Decide on a topic and what type of essay you will create NOW. Choos one of the following:
–Introspective photographer – best for a focus on things. Let us into your mind.
–First person documentary – best for interesting people. Let them tell their own story.
–Narrated documentary – best for interesting events. Put the viewer there.

Your final product must be at least one minute long and have at least 10 photos in it.

If you need to sign out a camera and/ or voice recorder, be ready to tell me what you are doing and when you will need the equipment by May 8.

Everything must be shot and recorded for this assignment by May 21. Final product is due May 28.

2. Photo Illustration-

TODAY, you should post an idea for an illustration along with the type of illustration you will be making.
If you need an idea, read the newspaper (ask me for one), look on news sites etc. Good photo illustrations are based on VERY specific ideas.

ALL content in the photo illustration must be original.

Start collecting / shooting images. If you don't know how to do something in PhotoShop, ask for help.

Everything must be shot for this assignment by May 8. Final product is due May 21.

3. Final Indesign project-
This is your final exam and a major grade. You will be given VERY specific guidelines for your final document soon. For now, read over the fall final exam, and the action/ architecture InDesign wrap up.

Step one view and choose.

Take AT LEAST ten minutes to look through the images contained in the links below. As you are looking, think about what type of illustration you are viewing. Most photo illustrations fit into one of the following categories:

The photo made into art
One or more photos are heavily altered so they don't look like photos anymore. They may look like a painting or a drawing, or a computer generated image.

The photo realistic alteration
One or more photos are altered, but the alterations look as though they are part of the original image. These images are often so well done that they would be unethical distortions of the truth if they weren't clearly labeled as illustrations.

The composite image
Parts of or entire photos are brought together to form a new composite image. The resulting image may be realistic or artistic.

The staged illustration (Traditional)
This is a single photograph of a staged or "set up" event. No major manipulation occurs after the image is shot because the manipulation occurs to the actual subjects of the photo.

Make two new pages in your InDesign Document

Write "Action" as the title in large letters.
Lay out 2-4 of your favorite action shots.

Each photo should have a full two sentence caption (review caption rules)
Make a text box where you explain everything you have learned about shooting sports/ action. Mention the categories of what to shoot when shooting sports and the techniques (Frisbee day) you should use to shoot action.

Page 2- Architecture
Write "Architecture" as the title in large letters.
Lay out 2-4 of your favorite architecture shots.

2. If you have shot Architecture, do the following:

A. Open your architecture shots in Bridge, and cut the junk, rate the rest, label the best.
(For you labeled photos - Write what category the photo fits in under the description field, and put your name in the creator field)

B. Open your best shot from each category in PhotoShop, and resize them so one side is no longer than 7 inches and the resolution is set to 72.

C. Place these resized images into a NEW powerpoint named "Last_First_Architecture" saved in your folder. The PowerPoint should look like the Architecture Preview Powerpoint except it is filled with your photos. Place ONE good example of each of the categories in the PowerPoint.

D. After each slide, insert another slide with a brief (1-2 sentence) explanation of how you captured the image and how you conformed to the category.

Assignment -
First - MAKE SURE YOU ARE DONE WITH ALL OF YOUR BACK WORK

Next, go to this site , and look through the 16 photos of the new Long Center for The Performing Arts in downtown Austin.

Number from 1-16 on your blog, and write what type of architectural shot each photo is the best example of. Then, pick your favorite photo, write the number, and write a 4-7 sentence critique of it discussing overall impact, focus, exposure, composition, etc.

Architecture Preview

Note - You will be shooting architecture IN school during class time. You should be shooting action outside of school. Both shoots are due by Apr. 4

When shooting architecture, you should consider the following:

Architectural considerations:

1. Details - Wide shots of the entire building often don't give you a full sense of the character of a structure. The best way is often to get close (either literally or with telephoto lens) and get nice shots of the little details that make a building special.

2. Light - The way that light interacts with and travels through a building is a big part of the mood of a building. By finding areas where natural and artificial light create dramatic scenes, and photographing these with a slow shutter speed (tripod is helpful) a photographer can capture the light as it defines the building.

3. Patterns - Repeated patterns often define the large interior and exterior spaces of a building. By framing a shot so as to maximize the effects of repeated lines, structures and shapes, a photographer can capture the visual rhythm of a building.

4. Angles and shapes- Anything other than a right angle or a rectangular shape is worth photographing, and right angles can even be interesting if photographed well. Buildings are a collection of shapes. Photographers should look at them that way and emphasize interesting geometry whenever possible.

5. Surroundings - Buildings exist in a setting, and that setting helps to define the story of the building. Is the building in harmony with its surroundings or does it stick out like a sore thumb. If your shooting a wide exterior shot of a building, try to show how it interacts with the surroundings. Consider framing the building with its surroundings.

Pick a sport that you would like to shoot. Post the following on your blog:
1. Name of the sport (You may choose a non-Akins event if you wish)

These are MAJOR grades. YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DO NOT SEND THIS EMAIL.

First, Make sure you have done ALL of the following:

Your final exam InDesign document (started as the final exam last semester) is saved into your server (T:) drive folder.
You have inserted your original Yearbook layout into the document toward the end, but before the glossary (Click here for reminder)
You have finished the color shoot (Click here for reminder), and edited the images in Adobe Bridge, and added the metadata (Click here for reminder). This is all saved in your (T:) drive folder in a folder named "Color_shoot"
You have cropped the best photos from the color shoot and placed them into your InDesign yearbook layout (see item 1, above)
You have created a page in your InDesign document that is a magazine cover (Click here for reminder) , and you have cropped one of your portrait shots to fit the cover. You have placed the cropped portrait into your magazine cover InDesign page.
Insert another page in your InDesign document after your Magazine cover, and place your finished "swarm" image on the page. It's your choice how you crop it and place it.

Next -Make a PDF of your InDesign document, and email it.

Open your InDesign document. Got to File> Adobe PDf presets > (smallest file size).
Title it "lastName_FirstName_pj_4" and save it to your (T:) drive folder.
Email it to Connolly (mconnoll@austinisd.org) or Reeves (mreeves1@austinisd.org) by 5pm on Friday, Feb. 22.
Subject of the Email should be "FirstName LastName's InDesign.

YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DON'T Email this! Even if you are not finished with everything, you must email it!

Extra Credit Contest - Win extra points and prizes!

Work Day

I am in Arlington with photography students at the ATPI photography convention.

1. Make sure you are caught up on all of your work. Several of you have not placed your InDesign yearbook spread into your final exam document, and several of you have not designed your magazine cover in your final exam document. DO THESE.

2. Turn in any film you have by placing it in a CVS envelope in the post office tub, and writing your name on it. If you have a camera, turn it in to Mr. Reeves.

3. If you have re-read the entire blog, and are finished with everything, do the following extra credit assignment:

Extra Credit-
Bill Fortney will be speakinf at the conference we are attending. Go to the link below, and look through his images post your favorite one on your blog, and write a 3-6 sentence critique. Discuss the subject matter, exposure, composition, and lighting.

Next - write a question for bill. I'll read these tonight and might ask him one of your questions.

Color Shoot Wrap Up

Step one- Drag Photos into your folder from the CD

Place the CD in the drive. When the Kodak software pops up, hit "Exit"
Cancel the startup wizard.
Click on "My Computer", and RIGHT CLICK on the "KODAKCD" icon
Select "Explore"

Click on "My Computer", and go to YOUR folder on the (T:) drive
Drag the "PICTURES" folder from the CD into YOUR folder on the (T:) drive
Rename the folder from "PICTURES" to "Color_shoot"

TAKE THE NEGATIVES OUT and store them in your folder
GIVE THE CD in the ENVELOPE back to the teacher as a backup

Step two - Open and edit photos in Adobe Bridge

Open Adobe Bridge (Shell Icon).
Point bridge to the "Color_shoot" folder YOUR folder on the (T:) drive
Allow the photos to render. (Wait)
Edit the photos as follows:

Rate the photos- Rate all of the remaining photos with 1-5 stars by hitting "Ctrl + 1-5". A five star shot is amazing and award winning. A one star shot will probably never be used.
Label the photos - In the Metadata , (1) Enter your name in the "creator" field for EVERY photo. (2) Enter one of the following in the "description" field: candid or portrait. Then describe the techniques you used for each (advanced techniques, lighting etc.)

Step Three - Open and correct the RGB levels of each photo

Double click on each photo in Bridge to open it in PhotoShop. For each photo:

Hit Ctrl+ "L" and adjust EACH Channel of the histogram (get rid of the flat areas)

Close each photo after it's adjusted.

Step Four - Start cropping and placeing your photos.

Open your main (final exam)InDesign document. You should have an original spread and a magazine cover layout just waiting to have beautiful photos added to them. Do it!

Open your photos in PhotoShop. Crop them to the correct size and 300 dpi. Save them as DIFFERENT files. Place them into your documents.

AA Read in - Gordon Parks and Langston Hughes

Open the Gordon Parks presentation by going to:

Make sure the presentation is in full screen play mode so you can click on the different links it contains.

Look at the clock, and start reading some poems. Read for as long as you want. When you are done,

ON YOUR BLOG - Post how many minutes for which you read, and post the name of your favorite Langston Hughes Poem.

ON YOUR BLOG -Look through the rest of the presentation. On your blog, post your favorite photo by Parks. Critique it as a portrait (what type is it, what is the effect, how do the lighting, pose, etc. create this effect?

When you finish, make up old work that you didn't finish. If you have a camera to turn in, give it to Mr. Reeves in 253. Make sure you have transferred all of your files to the (T:) drive

Start Creating Your Magazine Cover

1. look back over your magazine design blog posts, and browse other people's posts to remind yourself of what a good magazine cover looks like.

2. Open your InDesign document.

3. Add a page after the yearbook layout and before the glossary, design the template for a magazine cover. It must include the following:

A. Magazine name
Think carefully about the font you use
You may use the name of a real magazine or make up your own

B. A teaser / cover line (headline type description) for the main story. Remember that you will be placing your portrait into the cover next week. If you choose to do a poster style cover, you may remove this later.

C.
If you choose to make a "picture married to type" or a "forrest of words" type cover, create the following:
At least two teasers (Cover lines) for secondary stories. (Be creative)

If you are creating a poster, you do not have to create additional cover lines.

D. Pricing and date information. (Inserting a bar code is extra credit)

Magazine Cover Preview

This assignment consists of two blog posts.

After you shoot your portrait, you will use it as the central element of a mock magazine cover design that will occupy a page of your InDesign document.

Copy and paste the following into a post titled: "Cover History"

In your post, write a short (50-150 word) explanation of what the main attributes of each of the four types are. Use your own words, and DO NOT copy and paste.

Add practice photos to your practice layout - Quiz Grade

1. Choose a theme / topic for your practice layout (The one we did together) Type the name of that theme into your headline space.
2. Do a google image search for photos that relate to that theme. Save the images, crop them to the correct size to fit your layout, and File>Place them into your InDesign yearbook layout.
3. Write funny captions.
4. Print your layout.

Have fun with this, but keep it appropriate. This is a quiz grade.

–Choose a large image (at least 100k)
–Right click on image, and select “save image as”
–View the largest version (not a thumbnail)

Transferring your yearbook layout to your final exam document

In InDesign, open BOTH your final exam file, and your original (NOT your practice) yearbook layout.

Add two pages to your final exam file so you have two empty facing pages (spread) before your glossary. Use Layout > Pages > Insert Pages.

Click anywhere in your yearbook layout and hit "Ctrl + A" to select everything. Hit "Ctrl + C" to copy everything.

Back in your Final exam document, click anywhere in the first blank page that you just created. Select "Edit > Paste in Place."

Save your work. All future work on your yearbook spread should be done in the final exam document that is saved on the server.

The perfect role of film

On your Blog

Plan your shoot - post what you plan on shooting and when you will shoot. Note if you need a camera

You will be provided one roll of film with 12 shots on it, and we will process this roll for you. Your goal is to perfectly shoot the following.

You will lose two points for:
Every shot that is out of focus
Every shot that does not fill the frame
Every shot that is not part of the assignment
Every shot that is not properly exposed

Take your time, and do it right!

What to Shoot

Content

At least three portrait shots – Another person or a self-portrait
At least six candid shot – Capture real moments. These may be for your end of year photo essay, or they be of any event you choose (Remember to get close, capture emotion or action, and focus!)
Three shots of your choice – you may shoot more portraits or candids. Regardless of what you shoot, they MUST be in focus and well composed.

Techniques
All photos must follow the three photojournalism rules (except portraits may be posed)
At least three of the photos must be clear examples advanced composition techniques (framing, repetition, leading lines, rule of thirds, simplicity, balance etc.)

Multimedia Perspective

Melanie Burford, a staff photographer for the Dallas Morning News who was part of a team that won the 2006 Pulitzer prize for breaking news photography, spoke to Akins Journalism students at the TAJE convention over the weekend.

Amoung the major points that she made is the fact that multimedia is one of the most important skills that journalists and particularly photojournalists need to master if they are going to have a chance of being hired in the near future.

Photoshop Basics - Editing photos for publications

Step one- Drag Photos across the network

On your desktop - find the "Journalism Network" Icon and open it
You will see a shortcut to all of the computers in the room. The files for this assignment can be found on the "J3" and "J4" computers.

Open your folder on your computer (You should have made a folder named your name inside of "My Documents" on the computer you use.

You should now have two windows open on your desktop. In the J3 or J4 computer, find the "photojournalism" folder. Drag the "edit shoot" folder into your folder.

Step two - Open and edit photos in Adobe Bridge

Open Adobe Bridge (Shell Icon).
Point bridge to the folder on YOUR computer.
Allow the photos to render. (Wait)
Edit the photos as follows:

Cut the junk - With unusable photos (out of focus, poorly shot, etc.) selected, Hit "Ctrl + Delete"
Rate the rest - Rate all of the remaining photos with 1-5 stars by hitting "Ctrl + 1-5". A five star shot is amazing and award winning. A one star shot will probably never be used.
Label the Best - In the Metadata of the four and five star photos, Enter your name, and "Cross Country" in the description field

Step Three - Open and Crop Photos in PhotoShop

Watch the demonstration in class to learn how to do the following to the BEST photos.

Rotate the canvas
Set the crop tool and crop for different uses (Online, Newspaper, Yearbook)
Adjust color levels
Set to grayscale and sharpen (for Newspaper)
Save in different formats

Step Four - Save or "publish" your photos

You will end up with three edited photos.

A four or five star color photo set to 8"X10" and 72 dpi, saved as "online_edit" and posted on your blog. (saved as .jpeg)
A four or five star color photo set to 8"X10" and 300 dpi, saved as "yearbook_edit" in your folder. (saved as .tiff)
A four or five star grayscale photo set to 8"X10" and 170 dpi, saved as "newspaper_edit" in your folder. (saved as .tiff)

Overview
Like great pieces of art, great photojournalism shots are well composed. The photographer carefully places the elements of a photo within a frame in order to tell a story in the most visually powerful way possible.

Unlike art, the content of photojournalism is not, for the most part, controlled by the photographer.

This was never more true than during the attacks of September 11, 2001. This has been called one of the most photographed events in history.

Imagine being a photojournalist on that day, running into this disaster while most people are running away. In the midst of this misery and chaos, it is your job to capture the the human side of the story in an orderly and effective way.

Assignment

You will learn about some composition techniques and find examples of how photojournalists applied them to the chaos of 9/11.

Building the content of your spread
Best work
–You will fill the spread with your best photos and other work from the year. This will be your showpiece.It must include:

•At least two excellent examples of photojournalism
–Human knot, academics, sports/ action etc.
•Other types of photography if you wish
•Well written captions for the photojournalism pieces
•Story area will discuss fundamentals of photography (more later)
•Sidebar will include examples and descriptions of digital work(more later)

Today

•Look through your final InDesign document from last year, and photos you have saved in your folder and posted on your blog.
•Write a starter plan for which photos you want to include in the spaces on your printout
•You may alter your layout, but if you break a rule you will have to explain why in writing

Planning the electronic essay

•Pick a topic .
–Common topics include interesting things, events or people. Make sure you have access to what you will shoot and record by May 7.
–Your goal is to tell a story.
•Pick a format that matches your topic.
–Introspective photographer – best for a focus on things. Let us into your mind.
–First person documentary – best for interesting people. Let them tell their own story.
–Narrated documentary – best for interesting events. Put the viewer there.

On your blog, post your topic, format, and the date that you wish to shoot.

Assignment - THERE IS ONLY ONE STUDENT WHO DID THIS ASSIGNMENT CORRECTLY!

Per. 3 - The assignment is to use your new knowledge of layout rules to edit the previouos posts you made.

Previously, you were supposed to post examples of spreads you liked.

Now, YOU MUST EDIT THOSE POSTS, and list any rules that are broken.

You must learn the rules before you break them

Design Elements

Photos – Images originating from a camera. Photos form the core of the layout and should be designed first in a “pinwheel” formation.
Text – Display type such as headlines and titles should be large and attention getting. Body text such as stories and captions should be easy to read.
Art – Lines, boxes, gradients and drawings should enhance a layout and add meaning or order, not merely decorate.
White Space (AKA Negative Space) – An area of the layout that has no text, photos, or art. White space should be planned and used as an effective way to separate elements and lead the eye.

Other terms

Spread – Two facing pages that form a visual unit.
Gutter- Extra pica between facing pages that allows for binding.
Eyeline (AKA visual center) – Horizontal line off of the true center established by one pica of white space. All elements should “hang” off of this line except the dominant photo which should be crossed by it.

White Space Rules

No trapped white space!!
Consistent ONE pica internal spacing
USE white space to lead the eye
Use it to establish a 1 pica Eyeline (visual center)
Use it to establish Simplicity

Photo Rules

There must be a dominant photo (about twice the size of other photos)
Other photos should “hang” off of the dominant and the eyeline and be grouped toward the center
5-7 photos per spread
Leave room for captions next to EVERY photo.
Photos should be rectangular (golden mean or phi)

Text Rules

Display text
Headlines (Primary , Secondary)- at least one verb
Must lead directly into lead of story
Titles – No verb necessary, applies to spread, not story
Large, at least 24 points
Traditionally Sans-Serif font that matches the spirit of the spread
Body text
Body, captions, bylines etc.
Must be easily readable
Traditionally Serif font
Should be split into small gray areas

Art Rules

Illustration – Should enhance, not merely decorate
Drawing that takes place of photo or gives information
Page elements – Often used to associate or dissociate
Rule lines
Screened boxes
Etc.

Yearbook layout preview

Earlier this year, we spoke about the four design elements that make up a page:
Text (body and display)
Photos
Art work (including small elements such as lines and boxes)
White Space

You will be using the photos you took for either the architecture or the action/ sports photography as the basis for a traditional yearbook spresd.

As we begin our yearbook design unit, it is usefull to see how others have used these elements to design pages.

Do the following:
1. Go to the Taylor yearbook gallery
2. Select "State > Texas" and "School Type > High School" and hit "Search"
3. Spend at least 20 minutes browsing through the layouts. Click on the thumbnails to see larger versions.
4. When you see spreads you like, right click on them and save them to your folder.
5. Post the following FOUR spreads to your blog.

A. Post a spread that uses text in an interesting and effective way. Label this as "Good Text"
B. Post a spread that uses photos in an interesting and effective way. Label this as "Good photos"
C. Post a spread that uses art work in an interesting and effective way. Label this as "Good Art"
D. Post a spread that uses white space in an interesting and effective way. Label this as "Good White space"

Electronic photo essay preview

1. The introspective photographer - Photographer discusses taking the photos that appear on screen as they appear. Photographer gives insight into the photographic process and what he or shee was going for in the photo.

2. The first person documentary - The subjects of the documentary are interviewed and their actual voice(s) are used to tell a story.

3. The narrated documentary - The photographer tells a true story using photos to illustrate the points.

All images must be saved as your initials and one of the following categories:

Entering Architecture Shots into the Contest

You must enter one of each shot for each of the five Architecture categories.

First - Use Adobe Bridge to sort and rank your architecture shots (they are on j3 - card downloads)

To enter a shot:
1. Make a folder named "best_architecture_shot" in your folder.
2. In the new folder, save the five shots. Name each "your initials _ category" (ex: mc_details)
3. Upload each shot to your blog.
4. Label and discuss each uploaded photo.

Posting your photo illustration to your blog

1. Make sure your photo illustration is placed on a page in your inDesign document.
2. In InDesign, select File > Adobe PDF Presets > [smallest file size]
3. Name it and save i. Hit "export" and "ok" when prompted (this will make a PDF of the entire document)
4. Open PhotoShop
5. Open your pdf document in PhotoShop. Select only the page with the illustration on it in the "Import pdf" box when it opens in photoshop. and hit "ok". Don't change any of the settings.
6. Save this as a jpeg
7. Upload this to your blog with the title "Photo Illustration"

Architectural Photography Preview

When shooting architecture, you should consider the following:

Architectural considerations:

1. Details - Wide shots of the entire building often don't give you a full sense of the character of a structure. The best way is often to get close (either literally or with telephoto lens) and get nice shots of the little details that make a building special.

2. Light - The way that light interacts with and travels through a building is a big part of the mood of a building. By finding areas where natural and artificial light create dramatic scenes, and photographing these with a slow shutter speed (tripod is helpful) a photographer can capture the light as it defines the building.

3. Patterns - Repeated patterns often define the large interior and exterior spaces of a building. By framing a shot so as to maximize the effects of repeated lines, structures and shapes, a photographer can capture the visual rhythm of a building.

4. Angles and shapes- Anything other than a right angle or a rectangular shape is worth photographing, and right angles can even be interesting if photographed well. Buildings are a collection of shapes. Photographers should look at them that way and emphasize interesting geometry whenever possible.

5. Surroundings - Buildings exist in a setting, and that setting helps to define the story of the building. Is the building in harmony with its surroundings or does it stick out like a sore thumb. If your shooting a wide exterior shot of a building, try to show how it interacts with the surroundings. Consider framing the building with its surroundings.

Photo Illustration Wrap up

If you have not finished your illustration, do so by Friday!

Remember-

The Illustration must be 8" X 10" and 300 dpi
At least one of the main elements must have been shot by you
Any other images you use must be legal (read the license on http://yotophoto.com/)
At least one element must have been changed in PhotoShop
The Illustration must clearly demonstrate a concept
Everything must be high quality
Save your final product in your folder.

Practice Photoshop

Download HI -Resolution, PUBLIC DOMAIN images that you will use in your illustration.

You MUST copy and paste the terms of use for any image you use into a text document, and save this into your folder.
If you didn't find a good public domain site in the last assignment, look through other people's blogs.

Shoot anything you can shoot now in class, and plan for other images

Plan for when you shoot anything else.

On your blog - type when you will shoot certain things, and tell me if you need a camera (No Promises)
All images should be collected and saved in your folder by the first day back from spring break.

Adobe Bridge Editing - Part 2

Once you are finished cutting the bad photos and rating the rest (see part one from yesterday) in Adobe Bridge, do the following:

1. Sort the photos by rating [view > sort > by rating]
2. Choose the BEST photo out the highly rated ones. Post this to your blog.
3. Write a caption in the metadata of the best photo.
A. In bridge, select the best photo.
B. Go to View, and make sure the "metadata panel" option is checked.
C. In the metadata panel, click on the pencil to the right of the "description" field
D. Type a one sentence caption (5ws and the H). You may make up the information. Click off the photo.
E. In your InDesign document, make a new blank page. File > Place the best photo.
F. Select the photo, and click on the "info" pallet (Select Window > Inf0 if the tab isn't active)
G. Click on the little arrow in the info pallet, and select "file info"
H. Copy the caption and paste it below your photo using the text tool.

Managing photos in Adobe Bridge part one

At the ATPI conference this last weekend, I saw a presentation on using Adobe Bridge (software that comes bundled with photoshop) to sort, manage, and even caption digital photos. This is how a lot of pros are doing it.

You will test your eye, and try out this new method with this exercise.

Step one - get the photos on your desktop.

There should be a folder named "edit" in your student folder in "my documents." If it's not there, go to J3 > Bridge_edit, and drag the "edit" folder into your folder.

Step two - load the photos into Adobe Bridge

Go to start> programs > Adobe Bridge to open the software.
Once open, navigate to the "edit" folder

Step two - cut the junk
Hit Ctrl+Delete to erase any photo that is unusable

Step three - rate the rest
Hit Ctrl 1-5 to add stars. One is just OK. Five rocks!
You are selecting for a "people" competition, so your fives should all be great photos of interesting people.
