Gold Lake Sunset

Gold Lake Sunset
By:
William Pellouchoud

Caption: A radiant sunset moment is shared between both earth and sky.

Critique:
Pellouchoud has always done good work, and this is no exception. The photo captures the peak of a Colorado sunset reflected in a still lake. There is a long depth of feild, but beacuse of the lighting, you can only tell by the boulder in the foreground, and the clouds in the background. The lake is framed by the dark forest on top, the tree on the left, as well as the boulder and craggy rocks that make up the bottom. The details of the boulder that takes up the far bottom left of the photo are etched out by the sunset. The details aren't very sharp, most likey because of a large aperature, used to let in as much light as possible. The tree and boulder make up the far left thirds column. The dark band of trees cut through the center of the frame, but is serves as a barrier between the real sky and the reflection; if it were to fall on a thirds line, you would lose the top of the tree or the bottom of the boulder.

"I go into a place of gratitude, appreciating that I have the time and the luxury to do this. I'm almost in a joyful place. I probably have a smile on my face. Oooohh. This is good. Life is good. " -LILO

critique:

This photo  was compiled to share the feeling of relaxation inside a traditional Korean-style bathhouse located in Lakewood, Washington. It's a place where, in a tradition spanning centuries and the globe, evolving from times when few families had their own private bath, women all kinds of women soak, scrub, steam and unwind.  Black-and-white infrared film was used. An opaque red filter over the electronic flash rendered it invisible to the bathers. Pools of water absorbed the infrared radiation, appearing darker in print. Areas below the skin reflected infrared radiation, sometimes making veins more apparent. you can tell that tis photograph is a short depth of field because in the photo the only thing tht is in focus is the water. By looking at the water it is almost like leading lines directing your eyes down the photo while in the background you can see a woman but the imag is not in focus.

kids sitting

By:(Dennis Nett / The P-S)

Caption: Percy Hughes Magnet celebrated its 75th anniversary with speeches from dignitaries and songs from the student body. Seated on the floors of the cafeteria are the students dressed in the colorful T-shirts representing the rainbow of diversity.

Critique: This is a very busy photo because there is a lot of kids in it. There are leading lines in this photo because the color of the kid's shirts and the way they are sitting makes leading lines. The depth of field is short not long because the kids in the front are in focus and the kids in the back are not.  The aperture must have been big.

Mia walking home.

Subject: Mia walking home.

By: David Hoegsholt

Caption: Mia walking home through the small recreational areas seperating the buildings after visiting her pusher.

Critique: This pictue has a long depth of field. All of the picture is in focus. Mia (the CVI) looks small and insignificant. It makes her seem like she's just a small person in a huge world. The tree helps set a type of frame to trap Mia in. Also she is not centered so the Rule of Thirds comes into play. She is a little passed the center mark.

I like this picture because it has a long dept of field ,and it has a high
shutter speed.Wacth help the picture stay in sharp from top to down. It also show
some emotion ,and it shows how the people stuggled to get through the knee deep mud,
landslides ,and closed roads that is leading towns so people can get food, fresh
water and clean clothes.

Critique: This photos es very good. The the background helps the eye stay
focus on the CVI. The background is soft, probably by a slow shutter speed.
The CVI is not all the way in focus probably by a big aperture. The CVI is
also in the middle of the picture.

Mother hugs her son after arrival for homecoming ceremony

Caption:Teresa Yung of Herkimer hugs one of her twin sons, Sgt. Benjamin Yung, outside Exec Air after he arrives on a bus with the 1019th Quartermaster Company for the homecoming ceremony.

Critique: This photo brings joy and emotion to both the viewer and photographer. To be able to take such a sentiment photo to cherish as a memory has to have some highlight. Obviously there is very little shutter speed and a large aperture but it is still a very well taken photo. The background is not as sharp as the "point picture", it is very soft and definitely out of focus. The originality and unique character of this photo is the wonderful emotion that is more than just obvious. This photo shows exactly how the person is feeling without a story or even much of the caption at all. There is no distraction in the background which brings alot to the photo, along with it's eye catching features.

msn photo of the week- bullfighter

By: Guillermo Arias / AP

Caption: Touch and go

Spanish bullfighter Pablo Hermoso da Mandoza preforms during a bullfight at the Nuevo Pogreso Arena on Feb. 20 in Guadalajahar City, Mexico

Critique:

This picture in very intersting. You can see every little detail on the bulls blood soacked body. Meaning that the shutter speed must have been a very high one. Also there is no bluring at the horses feet and it has frozen the drit thats flying arround. The depth of feild is a short one because the dirt in the back of the arena is soft.

Crtique:
This photo caught my attention because it shows a sense of exscape and freedom at the same time. This photo was shot in long depth of feild. The photographer captures the hills, moutains and sky on the opposite side of the picked fence where the people is trying to help the baby to that side. That is where I get the sense of freedom. The side where the baby is leaving shows no sense of freedom.

Critique:

This is a very graphic photo.  You can only imagine what the people inside the towers were feelings at this moment.  Or the people on the plane for that matter.  It's just disturbing but so interesting at the same time.  I chose this photo because it allows you a closer look at the event than we were able to see(luckily).

Sample Post - Afgan Girl on a Swing With Very Nice Composition

Here is a template for what your posts should look like

Caption:
Afghan girl on a swing
An Afghan girl in a traditional Pashtun dress plays happily on a swing in Kabul at Nawroz, the Afghan new year, which starts on March 23, 2004.

Critique:

This is a very striking photo that conveys a sense of joy and shows a little slice of an exotic world. It photo has an extremely long depth of field as shown by the fact that the girl (CVI) and the mountains are both in relatively sharp focus. This allows you to notice the interesting stone buildings in the hillside. It is also shot with a very high shutter speed (at least 1/1000) because there is no blur at all. What makes it truly interesting though is the composition. The way the photographer positions the swing ropes parallel to the jagged mountains creates very effective leading lines. The fact that the background around the girl is a blue sky instead of the distracting mountains also creates the effect of simplicity around the CVI.

villagers take part in a celebration of the lantern festival in bejing, china. people around china are celebrating the lantern festival, which falls under the 15th day of the 1st lunar month.

Critique:

This photo really captures the unity of people celebrating a festival. The banners (cvi i assume) are very much in focus and the power lines (leading lines) really draw your attention. The blue sky background creates simplicity and adds to the contrast of colors along the banners. The center banner is framed by the far left banner and the people on the right.

dying aids patient with family (very emotional)

Link:

By:

Michael A. Schwarz

Caption:

Family gathers by the bedside of a dying AIDS patient as his life support is turned off. (1989)

Critique:

First of all I thought this photo was very sad and an important part of what was going on back in the 80's and now. This moment was captured, I believe, so that the whole world could see the reality of what eventually happens to people who are infected with the aids virus. The reason why I chose this photo is because it touched me very deeply. This photographer shot at a moment when that patient's family was overcome with grief. Sadly that is what made this a good photo not only because it is a rare look into a person's death but the fact that it shows a lot of emotion and so therefore you immediately know what just happened. That is what photojournalism is all about, capturing a real moment no matter what it is.
