Caption: Chinese dancers perform the dance 'thousand-handed Goddess of
Mercy' during a show in Sanya, south China's island province of Hainan,
March 25, 2005. The dance was presented by 21 deaf and mute dancers from
China's Disabled People's Performing Arts Troupe. The troupe, established in
1987, is an amateur mass art troupe composed of visually impaired, audibly
impaired and physically and mentally challenged people. Picture taken March
25, 2005.

Critique: This photo is very interesting. The way all the hands look as if
there only coming out of the girl in the middle. It has a very short dept of
field, you cant tell whats going on in the background other than blurs, and
some of the hands in the very back are slightly soft. The focus isn't that
great either. The girls face is soft and you have to look hard to realize
that her hands are in the front of her.

The fight over Terri's Fate

By: Peter Muhly

Caption: Protest
Demonstrators display photographs of Terri Schiavo during a protest in October 2003. Schiavo has been at the center of a long and bitter court battle between her parents who want to keep her alive and her husband, who wants to remove her feeding tube on the basis that she had previously indicated that she would not want to live under such circumstances

Critique:  I really like this picture because it means a lot to many people including myself.  I also like how the picture shows emotion.  This is a photojournalism picture.  I like how the shadows are shown in the grass.  Even though people are looking at the camera it's still a good picture.  The biggest thing about this picture is how much it means to us.  If someone else saw the picture they would be able to tell what was happening.

Caption: Caught in crossfire from the 3rd Intantry Division fighting through

bloodstained children.

Critique: This photo has a striking sense of mood and story all in one. There are two
children and a mother who are horrified for their lives and the atmoshpere around them. The
focus and detail that this picture also includes is one very important and attention
drawing aspect. You don't notice the fear just by the caption but by the candid moment of
this photo. The shadow of the light on the ground around and behind them is in surprisingly
good focus along with other many aspects with this photo that draws out the perfection at
just the right amount.Back to the lights, it's not only the focus but this characteristic
adds a tint to the photo that helps the viewer detail and notice things better. This is a
very well taken photo.

Critique: The CVI is right in the middle of the picture and is in the center for the rule of thirds. The focus is good and the people in the background seem to be a little out of focus; not blurry but out of focus. The pictuer captures the boy emotion as the little boy holds his hands up and looks mad.

critique This photo tells a story about George W Bush's campaine for president of the United States of America. The picture fills the frame because there is no dead space left to fill. It is candid because George W Bush has no idea that there is a photographer taking a picture of him at that exact moment.  It also shows emotion in his facial expressions while giving a speech so that the crowd will respect him and vote for him in the 2000 Race for the White House in Washington Dc. It aslo has a short depth of field because the people in the background are blury. As a result homeboy won the election.

Wrinkled Hands

Caption: Jessie Ames, 96, holds a photograph of her housemate, Alma Cowden's great-granddaughter, Madison Filkorn. "When I was her age, cars weren't even invented," says Cowden. Ames and Cowden are residents at Elbridge's Mahan Gorham Manor, a restored colonial mansion for the elderly in Elbridge, NY.

My Critique

I thought this photo was eye catching and different.  Its a good photojournalism photo because it tells a story.  Of what I can tell the photo has a short depth of feild because the small parts of the background are out of focus.  It almost completely fills the frame.  I think this photo is good and unique because of the elder womans wrinkled hands.  It adds something to the photo.  The lighting is good, it seems to be coming from in front of the woman because of the way it hits the photograph just right.

BY: Raul Roa

CAPTION: Rodeo sure looks fun at the Industry Hills Equestrian Center, City
of Industry, Ca.

CRITIQUE: Nice photo. Makes the "audience" feel like the horse is coming
straight for them because of how close the photographer seems to be to the
horse. Good timing and shutter speed (around 1/1000) because everything
seems to be crisp-clear (excluding tassels, his tie, and strands of the
horse's hair, but the sand seems to be frozen in mid air nicely). Very short
depth of field because everything behind the horse and the guy seems to be
blurry. I like the expression on the cowboy's face...fear, doubt, and hope.
The photographer probably took the shot right when he knew he was going to
fall off because of the angle the guy seems to be on that horse. The rope
thing he's holding along with all the lines on the fences behind him, his
tie, and tassels create for very effective leading lines towards the CVI
(cowboy) and the expression on his face. Exposure and contrast is nice and
even. nothing over or under exposed. overall, nice shot.

open heart surgery

SUBJECT: some doctor people doing open heart surgery

LINK: http://www.daveroels.com/images/photojournalism_pic.jpg

BY: Dave Roels

CAPTION: none

CRITIQUE: I liked this photo because no one gets to see what a surgery
might look like from the patient's point of view. The photo has a short long
depth of field, even though it's not really relevant because it's in a small
room, but the corners of the wall and the ceiling are pretty clear. The
lighting in the photo and the dramatic angle the photographer portrayed
displays a "larger than life" appearance for the surgeon (CVI). Shutter
speed is also irrelevant in this shot because not much is moving, unless the
surgeon's scalpel is moving really fast, but i'd guess the shutter speed
would be around 1/600 of a second...maybe...because there's no blur. The
scalpel and the way the lights above the surgeon also creates effective
leading lines towards the CVI, and the contrast in the photo is also
very..."contrasty" (blacks and whites are very nicely exposed and nothing is
over- or under-developed).

Caption: Tear gas fills the air as state troopers, on order from Gov. George Wallace, break up the march. March 7, 1965, becomes know as Bloody Sunday after state troopers assault the marchers with clubs and whips. A shocked nation watches the police brutality on television and demands that Washington intervene and protect voter registration rights for blacks.

Critique:

The angle that the picture was shot at is very good. The picture was taken from behind the state troopers and their cars. The use of light hardlly has an effect because the picture is in black and white. The cars provide leading lines pointing towards the group of people getting tear gased. Also the street lines on the bridge provide leading lines. The focus seems to be on the cars and the people because the backround looks a little out of focus. This picture was shot with a very high shutter speed because all of the crowd and state troopers seem to be in focus.

This photo is very different, Its almost like a vignette.  The background and for ground are both out of focus, and the baby too is a little soft.  You can tell right away that the center of intrest though is the baby and his teddy.  I choose this picture because its cute an unordinary.  Its hard to tell weather the shutter speed was fast or slow.  If I had to guess I would say slow because the baby isnt doing alot of fast motions.  Another thing that is neat and eye catching about this photo is the bath tub has steam, or what looks to be steam rising from the sides of the tub.  This would be hard to catch, you would need just the right amount of light.

The picture was shot up close. All of the people are in focus, but the background is a little out of focus. The CVI is not excatly in the middle of the pictue bringing into play the Rule of Thirds. The clasp hands provide a leading line going to the guy in front with the watch. The picture captures the emotion of the activists showing that some looke worried and some look determined.

Critique:
I think this is a nice photo because of the nice
composition. The seats, windows, and rails serve as
leading lines leading to the woman sitting at the
back. I also really like the lighting, I'm sure it was
taken using a fast shutter speed because of all of the
light coming in through the windows. There is also
much contrast between the blacks and the whites, a
must for most black and white photos.

I really like the simplicity of this photo, especially
the colors. The CVI is in perfect focus and the
background isn't so kind of emphasizes it even more

field.

Tourists watch the moon slide in front of the sun during a solar eclipse in
the Australian outback town of Lyndhurst, north of Adelaide. The town is one
of four in the country where the 26-second full eclipse of the sun could be
seen (Wednesday, December 4, 2002)

Critique: I found this photo to be very interesting because of the story it
told. In this photo the CVI(the moon) is in relative focus. This photo was
probably shot with a slow shutter speed because only the moon is in focus.
This photo also has a short depth of field because the people are soft. The
people act as leading lines because you can look at them but they lead you
to the moon. The light that comes off the moon also makes the photo
interesting. The light seems to frame the moon, because everything around
the moon seems to be dark but the light brings the eye to the moon.

Critique: I think that this photo is really sad and interesting at the same time. It is sad because you see older men and one little boy. I don't think that the boy should be there.I think that he is to young it's like he has to help his self. It is interesting because you don't see nobodies head but that one little boy. This picture is showing a lot of emotion and it fills the frame. This picture also has no body is looking at the camera so that is good. The picture has great light, you focus on all the shirts that the men are wearing and then the little boy is just there.

Critique: This  photo was has a short depth of field and very clear exposure. Through the photo alone shows and draws attention to the man in the photo (mourning) over his brother, emotions. The photo is very detail and has an excellent CVI. It also captures a great deal of focus and clarity of what story is being shown through the photo. Not much bad about it at all.

Kabul: Life after Taliban

By: Aina

Caption:  A man has his photograph taken in front of Kabul Security Headquarters. The box camera - perhaps one of the most primitive types of camera - is very common in Afghanistan. During the Taliban era, only portrait photos were permitted, so box cameras were widely used.

Critique:  This picture shows a man in Taliban getting his picture taken.  They use different cameras then us known as box cameras.  This picture shows that the people there are living in poverty. I like how the photographer took the picture behind the other photographer because if the photographer would have taken the picture sideways it wouldn't be as effective.  This picture is also all in focus meaning that the photographer wanted to show us not just the CVI but it's surroundings also.

Subject: Surfer racing to beat the wash

Link: http://www.surfaricharters.com/photos/ben1.JPG

By: Ben ?

Caption: none

Critique: This is a very striking photo that must have been super hard to
capture because cameras usually don't work very well in water...so yeah. The
CVI, the surfer dude, seems to glow, yet look mysterious because only his
silhouette shows. The photo has a long depth of field because the foam
closer to the you is as clear as the clouds in the sky over by the
mountains, even though the lighting is horrible and you can't really make
out what's at the shore. The shutter speed must have been super high to
capture the little drops of water and ripples perfectily frozen in place (at
least 1/1000). There doesn't seem to be any blur at all. There is also a
little hint of leading lines that lead to the CVI (the shoreline and the
peak of the wave). The high contrast in the photo also leads to accentuating
the CVI because of the glow that seems to be around the guy.

It's using the rule of thirds. It was taken with a slow shutter speed

Bush is on the thirds line.  Also the photo is filled because the two people fill up the front of the photo and then the tree in the back fills the rest.  Also the photo has a short depth of field because the people in front are in focus but the tree with lights in the back is kind of soft. Good CVI and the attention produced to bring a viewers attention is all in the art of the photographer. The angle is also very good because it doesn't bring all the distraction out in the background and reaches it's peak just well enough. Along with this the story of the photo shows how the event before and after happened. The photo is a story within itself.

CRITIQUE:

This photo is good because it caprutes alot of action and its great in focus.  The background is soft and has a shallow depth of field but you can still see the shapes of people in the audience and i think this is a neat effect.  The lighting is good, but the background is a little dark.  It captures all the emotion on Carly's face which is really important.  You can tell right away that she is focus and is showing alot of effort.  The camera was probubly set on a fast shutter spead to freeze her action so well.  Even her hair flying in the air is in focus...!

Summer in American Basin, Hinsdale County Colorado

Caption:

Critique:

The elments of the photo all nearly rest within a horizontal column of thirds within the frame; with the mountain tops and sky at the top, the mountain bases (starting below the line of snow) and feilds,  and then with the flowers making  up both the bottom of the frame and the forground. There is a long depth of feild; which translates to a small aperture.  There is a contrast between the darkness of the Mountaintops and clouds, sky, and bright green grass.  The snow near the base of the mountains is almost a light lavender color, which matches with the color of the flowers in the foreground. Near the top right of the photo, there is a lighter spot which -could- just be light striking through the clouds, or some sort of processing error.  The ridge that comes down from the top left thirds to just above the middle of the frame acts as a leading line into the valley; where either snow snakes up into the mountains, or soft indentions in the land give way to a field of flowers.

Beach

Critique: I really like how this picture shows lighting coming from the other side of the hill/mountain. I also like how the water is frozen. This photographer used a short depth of field. I also like how the mountain has a shadow in the sand. It's just a real calming picture. Simplicity is also somewhat shown in this picture.

By: T.C. Baker

Caption: UIL Track and Field Championships - May 14, 2004 - 3A Boys Long Jump: Garett Manning, Hallettsville (5)

Critque: The general message of this photo is that Garett Manning is trying his best in the
long jump to win UIL. I can find this in the photo by his facial expession. He looks focus
and determined. The exposure is frozen, because the sand in the pit is fozen in the air. The
exposure is also dark because you can tell the colors apart. The focus is sharp because
everything around the CVI is in focus. It has a shallow depth of field because the people in
the background are blurry. It's candid because his focusing on his jump instead of the camera.
It shows emotion, because can see the determination in his eyes. It also shows action because you see him landing in the pit and the sand flying. It also fills the frame because all you
can really see in the picture is Garett Manning. It's follows the rule of thrids because the
CVI is on the last thirds line.

Viet Cong Execution

Subject: Viet Cong Execution

By: Eddie Adams

Critique: This photo shows General Nguyen Ngoc Loan shooting a Viet Cong Prisoner held during the Vietnam War in 1968. This is a striking photo because it was shot at the exact moment that shows when the prisoner was shot and hasn't fallen over yet and he still has the _expression of pain in his face. This photo was shot with a large aperture which led to a short depth of field which is evident because the buildings in the background are soft. This photo is not too light or not too dark because you can see so much detail in the General's arm and the Viet Cong's face. The rule of thirds comes into play when the viewer sees that the shooter is on the left thirds line and the prisoner is on the right thirds line. There are also leading lines that lead the viewer's eyes from the shooter to the gun and then to the prisoner, the CVI.

Caption: Indonisians carry their belongings as they walk along the highway in Leupung distinck 25 miles southwest of Banda aceh. Help began reaching refugees in indonisias devastated Aceh province on saturday

Critique: This photo has a large depth of field. It has a dark exposure and a blurry background. You dont see very much emotion on their faces, but you can see that they've come a long way so they're probley tired of walking. The photo is candid and there is some dead space but overall its a good picture. What makes it interesting is that one side has all these people and the other side has the groud denting so its like the photo is divided in half.

Subject: Dog on black chair

By: Anonymous

Caption: none

Critique:

This is a very appealing picture because of the contrast between the blacks
and whites. Even though the picture is a color photo, the white dog and the
black couch give it the affect of a black and white photo. The whites in the
photo are bright and the blacks are nice and dark; perfect contrast. No
depth of field evident because of the blank white wall directly behind the
chair. No evidence of shutter speed size unless the dog was really jittery,
so the shutter speed would've been at least set to 1/800 so as to not create
a blur. If the dog was still throughout the shoot, shutter speed is
irrelevant. The lines on the floor tiles creates very effective leading
lines, which lead to the white doggy (CVI). The white background and simple
colors also create a simplicity effect around the CVI, causing the eye to go
straight to the dog.

shot

Volcanic Mudslide in Columbia
By Carol Guzy
1985, The Miami Herald

This shot is dramatic because it shows death in both disgusting and one of the worst ways.  The CVI is in very good focus with the background  very blurry.  The shot is in shallow or deep  because you can see alot of land even though it is blurry.  I think the shot makes an impact  on people to react that they need help over there.  Over all the shot is really good with a good CVI and blurry background.

This photo has a very long depth of field. You can see the ripples in the lake and the people in the far background.  The exposuse is really good because the lighting lets you see the shallow and the deep parts of the lake.  The photo is frozen because nothing is moving.  The picture is sharp because you can see many details of everything .  The frame is filled with the lake, the sky, the mountain range, and the clouds.  The CVI is the water because it takes up most of the picture.

This Picture was taken with a fast shutter speed because the horse and the bull are  not blurry and they froze the sand. This picture  was taken with a long depth of field because of the way that you can see  the background it gives you  the place where they are it also does not take you away from  the main element of the photo. This photo shows you the action and the expression on the bullfighter's face.

Critique: This is a great picture. Is shows a lot of action in it. The angle of the picture is really intresting. The way it is looking at the kids is shows that they can stand up for there selfs. The faces that the they are making are very tight. They aren't really moving just being poised. The picture has a lot of color in it. The color and banner brings out the there culture. The exposture is light but to left on the girl it looks like it has a shadow. The focus on the picture of sharp there isn't  blurry or soft. This picture also fills the frame and the people are not looking at the camera when the person was taling it.

Josh Smith jumped over Denver's Kenyon Martin.

Critique:

This photo is capturing Atlantas Josh Smith clearing Kenyon Martins head. This is a pretty amazing dunk that probally took time and practice to get down. His body and legs are in perfect symatry. The lighting is very nice and everything is in focus. There is no blurryness Josh Smith is frozen perfectly at the climax of the dunk. The picture is being taken during action which makes you feel like you are actually there. Obvisouly Josh Smith dosent know that they are taking the picture. There is absolutly no dead space either. The picture should appeal to many even if they dont like basketball.
